The Welsh Assembly Government created its own strategy for waste management, which it released in June 2002. This document replaced Waste Strategy 2000 (England and Wales) as Wise About Waste: The National Strategy for Wales. The Welsh strategy builds on the work of Waste Strategy 2000, and includes a number of primary and secondary Wales specific target:
- By 2005, to re-use or recycle at least 75% of C&D waste produced;
- By 2010, to re-use or recycle at least 85% of C&D waste produced.
The construction industry produces around 35% of the industrial and commercial waste in Wales and is the largest single source of controlled waste. The Assembly Government looks to the construction industry to minimise waste, meet the above targets, supervise contractors to ensure they embrace waste minimisation and recycling and incorporate secondary (recycled) materials where ever possible.
