Institute of Structural Engineering (IStructE)

IStructE was formed in 1908 and is now one of the world's largest professional bodies relating to structural engineering.  The institution is committed to supporting the industry through a number of avenues ranging from technical publications, training courses and lectures & debates.  The Institution has over 20,000 members in over 100 countries.

The Rethinking Construction Panel of the IStructE developed 'The Rethinking Construction Toolkit'. This is a practical guide, constructed to enhance skills and best practice.  The toolkit can be downloaded for free from the IStructE website.  The Panel is responsible for providing guidance on the changes in procurement and management practices being explored by the UK Government and Construction Industry.

The Construction Best Practice Programme of IStructE seeks to promote best practice throughout the industry by offering support to individuals, groups, companies and supply chains to improve the way they do business. The programme is designed to provide support on a variety of improvement areas, such as improved productivity, quality, reliability and minimisation of waste.

The Sustainable Construction Panel of the Institution aims to create a forum for information sharing and the promotion of best practice.  There is an intention to work alongside similar organisations out with the Institution to provide guidance to all those involved.  At present the forum has not been established.

The IStructE provide training courses and events to allow professionals to continually develop.  The types of training courses available are constantly being reviewed and updated.

Membership to the IStructE can be gained through a number of different grades ranging from Student to Fellow.  Annual subscription rates are also graded by membership level, ranging from free for full time students to £319 for Fellow members.
