Building Regulations

Building Regulations

The Building Regulations currently do not require any specific standards to be met in terms of recycled or reused materials. However, Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP) are now required on-site for developments of £300,000 and over in England, resulting in better management of on-site construction waste. There is also the introduction of the Code for Sustainable Homes to consider which, at present, does not set any minimum standards for new builds, although it is possible that this may change in the future.

The Sustainable and Secure Buildings Act 2004 introduces the requirement to report to Parliament on a biennial basis on the progress of the Building Regulations towards sustainability, therefore requiring methods of baseline assessment to be considered. It is likely that the Building Regulations will be expanded to cover the scope of waste in the medium to long term.
